this is one value i wanted to teach my daughter… concern for the environment, if only we have our own backyard, the downside of city living.
There are lots of different ways to incorporate concern for the environment even when you live in the city! If you’re specifically thinking about gardening, container gardening has become quite popular. Here is some information from a local seed company to help you http://www.westcoastseeds.com/product/Gardening-Supplies/Container-Gardening/#sthash.nxI14YGe.dpbs and http://www.westcoastseeds.com/topicdetail/topic/growing-food-in-containers/. Indoor plants, an easy to care for pet (a fish is a great place to start), recycling/composting, books that focus on nature & the delights to find in nature around the world, and your actions such as picking up litter and showing concern for living things will all help your daughter to “absorb” the importance of the environment. Of course getting out to enjoy nature walks, farms (even city farm plots), and other local natural areas such as the ocean or a lake will also really help to create sensorial experiences that she can connect to as her life-long love of the environment is nurtured.
thank you very much for the input 🙂
